1. James Agee and the Legend of Himself: A Critical Study
- www.system.missouri.edu
- James Agee and the Legend of Himself.
- "-- Robert Coles James Agee's literary reputation has grown enormously since his death in 1955. ... Ironically, Agee's greatest recognition as a writer came posthumously, when his novel A Death in the Family won the Pulitzer Prize.
- At the time of Agee's death, all of his published works were either out of print or buried in anthologies. Within fifteen years nearly everything Agee had ever written was in demand and available in print. Agee became something of a magical presence over a body of attitudes and experiences that may or may not have had anything to do with the writer or his accomplishments.
- In James Agee and the Legend of Himself, Alan Spiegel examines these accomplishments and treats Agee not simply as a celebrity, journalist, or "Depression" writer but as a self- interrogating literary artist who created a homemade legend from his earliest family memories, sifting his experience through an automythology composed of his mother, his father, and himself.
- Agee the man was fact, not legend. ... Alan Spiegel explores the interior life through the different but continuous versions of the Agee persona as they appear in his books. In doing so, he also counters the prevalent misconceptions about Agee's work and its confusion with details of his actual life. Spiegel considers Agee's major writing, giving extended attention to Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Agee on Film, The Morning Watch, and A Death in the Family.
- Rich and evocative, James Agee and the Legend of Himself offers readers a deeper understanding of a fascinating and charismatic American artist and his literary accomplishment. ...

3. Agee and Evans' Great Experiement
- history.hanover.edu
- Let Us Now Praise Famous Men: Agee and Evans' Great Experiment.
- It was in 1936 that James Agee and Walker Evans, on assignment for Fortune magazine, drove into rural Alabama and entered the world of three families of white tenant farmers. ... 1 Agee and Evans examined the life of the tenant farmer as closely as the president's committee, but from the perspective of artists, not New Deal politicians or economists. ... " 2 Nevertheless, the result of Agee and Evans' endeavors, a book entitled Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, is, as much as the New Deal itself, a great experiment in addressing the issues of social responsibility and human dignity that faced the United States during the 1930s.
- As Roosevelt recognized that traditional plans for economic recovery could not end the Depression, so Agee and Evans knew that traditional methods of photography and journalism would not work to convey accurately the hard and simple lives of the tenant farmers. ...
- Rather, as Agee tells us, they have posed themselves. According to Agee, Evans allowed the mothers to clean up their children, if they desired, before he photographed them. ... It was for Evans' honesty with the camera that Agee respected him, and for her photographic tricks that he despised the famous photographer Margaret Bourke-White.
- Yet they are not forgotten as Agee's story unfolds, for his descriptions of the individuals, the houses they live in, and the land they farm are so vivid as to draw the reader back to the photographs again and again, each time with a new layer of understanding.
- Readers uncomfortable with Let Us Now Praise Famous Men's refusal to fit into a traditional genre and Agee's frequent interruption of descriptive detail with streams of his consciousness have criticized the book as self-indulgent. Agee's transcendence of traditional literary forms is, however, appropriately representative of the Great Depression's call for innovation, and his self-consciousness reflects the intense humanism inherent in the New Deal's relief efforts. By overstepping the traditional bounds of genre, Agee allows his subjects to be seen not only as a cause for pity, but as real, complex, three-dimensional people whose lives, like the book itself, are simultaneously a poem, a play, a song, and a distorted social-studies textbook. ... " 4 It is at his most self-indulgent moments that Agee best expresses the hardest and saddest reality of tenant life and the Great Depression: the reduction of human life into a battle for physical survival. Sharing the Roosevelt Administration's sense of social responsibility and its respect for human dignity, Agee says:.
- Agee's self-consciousness also reflects the deep sense of shame and guilt that accompanies the realization that human dignity has been exploited and social responsibility disregarded, "that you are what you are, and that she is what she is, and that you cannot, for one moment exchange places with her, nor by any such hope make expiation for what she has suffered at your hands, and for what you have gained at hers. ...
- Both Agee and Evans' book and Roosevelt's New Deal, characterized by a humanist perspective, a willingness to experiment with new structural forms, and a deep self-consciousness of their objectives, invite evaluation. While the degree of success achieved by Agee and Evans can be argued as easily as the success of the New Deal, one thing remains certain: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men was the second great experiment to emerge from the 1930s.

- With these words James Agee acknowledged the restless journey his biography would encompass. Poet, novelist, journalist, film critic, and social activist, Agee would lead an unorthodox, hard-driving life that would result in an early death. ...
- Of Huguenot ancestry, James Agee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1909, the son of a postal worker who was killed in the prime of his life in an automobile accident. The loss of his father marked James Agee both short term and long term. ...
- In 1916 Agee was sent to an Episcopal boarding school in the Appalachians, Saint Andrews Seminary. Not unlike James Joyce's experience wit the Jesuits, the years spent in this monastic environment would shape and scar Agee for the rest of his days. Tormented by his sense of isolation and abandonment by his mother, he, nevertheless, found solace in the rigorous academic curriculum, and he formed his closest and most enduring friendship with his mentor, Father Flye, who became a surrogate parent, confidant, and spiritual inspiration for the remainder of Agee's forty-four years. ...
