- MadSci Network: Physics Subject: possiblility the ailerons can move in the same direction at the same time.
- Dear Mad Scientist Can anyone help me understand the function and the works of the ailerons? Outboard and inboard. Is it possible in ANY circumstances, ailerons can deflect in the same direction at the same time (outside of the ‘droop’ parameters?). Do they work the same in the fly by wire configuration planes as in the cable/pulley ones? What is the maximum angle the ailerons can deflect on a typical passenger plane like the Boeing 757/767 or 777? I know this primary flight control feature controls roll of the craft, but I wonder if it has any other functions i. ... Would there be a difference in function/deflection of the ailerons in passenger/commercial airplanes from the one in military/aerobatics crafts? Thank you. ...

- Wind-tunnel research comparing lateral control devices, particularly at high angles of attack VI : skewed ailerons on rectangular wings .
- The present report deals with flap-type ailerons hinged about axes having an angle with respect to the leading and trailing edges of the wing. Tests were made on four different skewed ailerons, including two different angles of skew and two sizes of ailerons. At the high angles of attack, all the skewed ailerons tested were slightly inferior with respect to rolling and yawing moments to straight ailerons having the same span and average chord. Computations indicate that the skewed ailerons are also inferior with respect to hinge moments. ...

- A Comparison of the Lateral Controllability With Flap and Plug Ailerons on a Sweptback-Wing Model.
- Abstract: An investigation has been conducted to compare the dynamic lateral control characteristics provided by step plug ailerons with those provided by conventional flap ailerons on a sweptback-wing model. ... The static stability and control characteristics of the flight test model were determined from force tests and the lag characteristics of the ailerons were determined from roll-free stand tests. ... At each lift coefficient in the flight test range the flap ailerons were adjusted to produce the same static rolling moment as was obtained by maximum projection of the plug ailerons. The controllability of the model was more satisfactory with plug ailerons alone than with flap ailerons alone except at lift coefficients below about 0. ... At the lower lift coefficients the time lag from full control deflection to maximum rolling acceleration caused by the plug ailerons was more objectionable than the slight adverse yawing caused by the flap ailerons; whereas, at the higher lift coefficients, the loss of rolling effectiveness caused by the large adverse yawing moments of the flap ailerons was more objectionable than the lag of the plug ailerons. At the stall, the model could be controlled satisfactorily with the plug ailerons alone or with the flap ailerons and rudder but could not be controlled satisfactorily with the flap ailerons alone. ...

- Ailerons can be used to generate a rolling motion for an aircraft. Ailerons are small hinged sections on the outboard portion of a wing. Ailerons usually work in opposition: as the right aileron is deflected upward, the left is deflected downward, and vice versa. ...

- We have been talking here about rolling the aircraft by using a pair of ailerons at the very trailing edge of both wings to increase or decrease the lift of each wing. ... Airliners use spoilers because spoilers can react more quickly than ailerons and require less force to activate, but they always decrease the total amount of lift for the aircraft. It's an interesting trade! You can tell whether an airliner is using spoilers or ailerons by noticing where the moving part is located. ...
