- One of these daring traders, Grigorii Shelekhov (1747-1795), encouraged by Tsarina Catherine the Great (1729-1796), established the first colony in Alaska, in 1784, at Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island. ... In 1794, the Tsarina fulfilled Shelekhov's pleas to establish an Orthodox mission in Alaska, and in 1799, Tsar Paul I (1754-1801) awarded Shelekhov's Russian American Company monopolistic control over trade and government, thus inextricably entwining the Company and the Church. ...

- Most recently, Alaskans gave the Red Cross over $1 million in financial donations for the Asian Tsunami Relief, unfortunately for the local Alaska chapter, all this giving went to causes outside Alaska. The Alaska chapter has reduced staff and restructured the service delivery to operate more efficiently on a statewide basis lowering operating costs by over $100,000 during the last six months. In spite these efforts, donations to the American Red Cross of Alaska have not met operating expenses resulting in a $35,000 a month operating loss since October 2004.
