- The aim of this project is to offer analyses into two types of text, a) literary theory, specifically texts which use the aphorism as a case of wit, and b) philosophy of textuality, specifically texts which take an interest in the aphorism’s function in philosophical communication, or more specifically, a philosophy of communicating wit. The underlying premise of this project is the assumption that whereas wit is linked to knowledge, the aphorism is linked to the discovery of knowledge.
- Most contemporary theorists on the aphorism (Gerhard Neumann et al. in Der Aphorismus, Darmstadt, 1976) make a distinction between the form and content of the aphorism at the expense of wit which figures in a subordinate relation to both the semantic and syntactic structures identified in the aphorism. The most common features of the aphorism are identified as brevity, isolation, wit, and "philosophy" (R. ... "An aphorism", Clifton Fadiman claims in his introduction to S. ... My contention is that the relation of wit to aphorism is not an unambiguous relation. Insofar as wit marks content, and form is something the aphorism as genre establishes per se, wit is pragmatic whereas the aphorism is epistemological. A number of questions arise: to what extent is wit a constituting factor in the construction of the aphorism? Under which conditions do we have a shift from the aphorism’s epistemological concerns to claims of pragmatic authority which are grounded in the performativity of wit? Can we make a distinction between performative and non-performative aphorisms? I call performative aphorisms the aphorisms which are self-reflexive, assume agency, and replace the dichotomy form/content with function. ...
- Investigating the reception of theory, especially since theory is often deemed dry, dull or even completely superfluous, is necessary to illuminate the presence of deconstructive or subversive uses of wit and aphorism in works of theory. Where there are grounds for a deconstructive reading mediated by the aphorism, my contention is that in the reception of works of literary theory and philosophy, one reads for the aphorism to get to the wit of the theses proposed. The appeal of the aphorism, both for writers and readers of theory, lies in employing it subversively against the canonical stamp of approval or disapproval of the philosophy or theory proposed.
- One of the objectives of this project is thus to follow in the footsteps of the literary theorist and the philosopher who forwards a thesis which in its thrust is first, mediated by the aphorism at its functional and constitutive level, and second, is grounded in a specific kind of wit which renders it aesthetic. My concern with the performativity of wit, which I describe as theory’s cunning, is an investigation into the seemingly non-performative aspect of the aphorism, which I describe as theory’s mask. Inasmuch as the aphorism shows a preference for a form beyond any challenge, wit shows a preference for a content beyond any challenge. ...
- The Authority of Wit (Here I intend to examine wit as an object text in Jacques Derrida’s contentions about the aphorism, which for Derrida is a subject text and functions, I suggest as a meta-level of wit ("Aphorism is the name")) .

- Aphorism in the Francophone Novel of the Twentieth Century Bell, Mark .
- Synopsis The first substantial investigation of aphorism in the contemporary French language novel. In this exploration of twentieth-century novels written in French, Mark Bell defines aphorism as a literary genre and demonstrates how it is used in seven texts that provide a cross-section of ideological stances and francophone communities. Aphorism in the Francophone Novel of the Twentieth Century includes critical readings of Terre des hommes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Alexandre Chenevert by Gabrielle Roy, Gouverneurs de la rosée by Jacques Roumain, Pluie en vent sur Télumée miracle by Simone Schwartz-Bart, La route des Flandres by Claude Simon, Présence de la mort by C. ... Bell addresses the problems inherent in the term aphorism, the narrative and discourse function of aphorism within the genre of the novel, the interrelation between the structure of aphorism and the epistemological and hermeneutical functions this sub-genre may perform as a component part of the narrative fabric, the ‘national’ character of aphoristics and the problems that arise from ‘anthologising’ a novel’s aphorisms. ...

- Working out Durkheim's Aphorism, the title used for this new book, emphasises Garfinkel's insistence that his position focuses on fundamental sociological issues and that interpretations of his position as indifferent to sociology have been misunderstandings. Durkheim's aphorism states that the concreteness of social facts is sociology's most fundamental phenomenon. Garfinkel argues that sociologists have, for a century or more, ignored this aphorism and treated social facts as theoretical, or conceptual, constructions. ...
- Garfinkel, in this new book, shows how and why sociology must restore Durkheim's aphorism, through an insistence on the concreteness of social facts that are produced by complex social practices enacted by participants in the social order. ...
