- Toward a New Asceticism.
- In the theological discourse of our time, the word "asceticism" has become one that collects everything we want to reject in ourselves and in historical Christian tradition. Theologies of embodiment, of play and of sexual identity celebrate the demise of asceticism. We lump together all historical asceticism and indicate our evaluation of it by labeling it "masochism. ... But an even more unfortunate result of the cavalier treatment of historical asceticism is the loss of ascetic practices as tools for the present care and cure of our own bodies and souls.
- When we try to understand asceticism we have to overcome a stereotype of the emaciated ascetic with the tortured face of a determined but inexperienced jogger. This stereotype, even though it was sometimes accurate, does not validate our caricature of all asceticism as anti-life, perverted and masochistic. ... Historic authors were unanimous in insisting that Christian asceticism is for the purpose of ordering one’s life, in all aspects of daily thought and activity, toward the new life which has become available to human beings in Jesus Christ.
- Asceticism does not necessarily imply a pejorative view of the human body. ... Yet this "old asceticism" is the rationale -- implicit or explicit -- which most historical treatises on asceticism assume.
- I will call this model "the new asceticism," not because it is never found in historic ascetical treatises -- it is frequently used there -- but because it presents an understanding of ascetic practices which is still important and useful for us.
- Because we have collapsed all asceticism into the first model, we have not understood completely the potential usefulness of the second. Ironically, because we have failed to adapt ascetic practices to our needs, we have reverted to the "old asceticism" that we wanted to reject. Because we think that we have rejected asceticism, we do not recognize the extent to which behavior patterns based on the first model are operative in contemporary life. ...
- what might constitute a new asceticism for our time? First, it must consist of practices fully as good for body as for soul. ...
- In Christian tradition, the most consistently emphasized ascetic practice which meets the requirements for a new asceticism is fasting. ...

- Asceticism.
- Asceticism denotes a system of practices that aims at the development of virtue and strength of character through self-denial and mortification. ... Methods of asceticism generally include exercises such as celibacy, fasting, upright posture, periods of silence, performance of unpleasant tasks, and withdrawal from human companionship. ... Forms of self-mutilation, flagellation, and castration have been used in extreme practices of asceticism. ...

- Asceticism and Renunciation.
- In this country with the resurgence of Aryan Discipline a flood of asceticism has spread everywhere. ... Therefore it is quite natural for those who are born with an urge for yoga, derived from past lives, to turn towards asceticism. When such souls with an inborn yogic urge begin to increase in number and by contagion to spread among the youthful generation a strong movement to asceticism, the doors are opened indeed for the good of the country, in one sense; but also along with the good there arise causes for apprehension. ...
- If such people attracted by the charm of asceticism abandon their true law of life and their God-given work, then with the destruction of their true law the nation too will perish. ... I do not speak of young ascetics who have been freed from all debts in a previous life; but it would be wrong for one who has not made himself ready for asceticism to take to it. Great and magnanimous Buddhism has done no doubt immense good to the country, yet no less harm, because of asceticism spreading everywhere and the warrior class (Kshatriya) renouncing their appointed function; and in the end, itself was banished from the country. ...
- In the Gita, Sri Krishna has time and again directed Arjuna not to follow asceticism. Why? He admits the virtue of Sannyasa and yet, in spite of the repeated questionings of Arjuna overwhelmed as he was with the spirit of asceticism, abnegation and altruism, Sri Krishna never withdrew his injunctions with regard to the path of action. ... In answer, Sri Krishna has explained that renunciation is greater than asceticism, to remember God and do one's appointed work without desire if far greater than freedom to do as one likes. ... The Divine said to Arjuna, "It is harmful to the world to give up work, to give up work is the spirit of asceticism. And an asceticism without renunciation is meaningless. What one gains by asceticism one gains also by renunciation, that is to say, the freedom from Ignorance, equanimity, power, delight, union with Sri Krishna. ... Therefore, if you give up work through asceticism, all will follow that path and bring about the confusion of social values, and the reign of the wrong law. ... But this is not renunciation of work through asceticism, this is to give up all vital urge to action involving immense labour and effort through the rejection of egoism and through union with the Divine - and transcending all gunas, to do works as an instrument impelled by His force. ...

- As a matter of fact, the article explains, these methods constitute, or are to be understood as being methods of asceticism: methods favoring:.
- However, under the "ascetic's" garb, flashes a devil's tail: for, in fact, this is a question of an "asceticism" which flies in the face of the most elementary principle of true Catholic asceticism, a false austerity taking no account whatsoever of the Magisterium of the Church and which is unmistakably oriented towards. ...
- ASCETICISM: Rightly understood, this is self-discipline in all its forms, particularly those voluntarily undertaken out of love of God and desire for spiritual improvement.
- We do observe, however, right from the outset, that the "apostles" of conjugal "asceticism," with their undiscerning and, even worse, unconditional propaganda of so-called "natural methods," are trudging wearily along a path long ago condemned by the Magisterium.
- Hushing up the truth of these motives as well as their gravity, which alone can justify or make licit what are known as "natural methods," simply constitutes an incitement to a life of sin under the pretext of "asceticism. ...
- Now, if this will of the couple is not justified through a moral or physical impossibility of fulfilling this duty (an essential condition "swept under the rug" by our "ascetics"), the so-called "natural methods" remain precisely "a simple technique, free of any side-effects, of avoiding having children" and the alleged effort at this type of "asceticism" finally reveals itself for what it really is indeed: a selfish plan, as well as a systematic seeking after free and unfettered sensual pleasure; in a word, the sin of "hedonism presented under the guise of a pseudo-mysticism. ...
- ASCETICISM OR SHARED SELFISHNESS?.
- Just what kind of "asceticism" is this, anyway - we are still wondering - which seeks the perfection not of the love of God, but of a puny self-centered love? Of course, one's love for his or her spouse, when raised to the level of Christian charity, does become a means of elevating oneself to the perfect love of God, but it remains a means, not an end in itself, and often tends to become, as a consequence of original sin, an obstacle to our love for God: "I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come" (Lk. ...
- Making the love of one's spouse "the be-all and end-all" of one's asceticism is simply putting a creature in God's place; this is nothing but a form of idolatry, not of love. ...
- With this pseudo "asceticism" of "natural methods" of birth control, we are facing the full-fledged error of "personalism," an error which, contradicting the traditional doctrine of the Church, places the primary end of marriage in the personal satisfaction and development in the couple's mutual love. ...
- All of which has absolutely nothing to do with heavenly-minded asceticism!.
- Just what is, therefore, such an asceticism which teaches married couples to avoid the accomplishment or, at least, the generous accomplishment of their duties in the married state?.
- Asceticism is not an end in itself, it is but a means: its goal is to dispose the faithful to respect and carry out God's will, even when this costs a personal effort or sacrifice. ...
- We are looking here, therefore, at an "asceticism," known as "natural methods," which is actually at the service of selfishness, and which even dares pretend its "self- control" is superior to that of those married couples who, generously and in a Christian manner, faithfully fulfill their duties of state, without seeking to avoid responsibilities, expenses and sacrifices.

- The primary case materials center in two chapters on the Waldensians and the Cathars, in which Kaelber skillfully sifts through historical materials to determine how these movements did and did not contribute to early manifestations of inner-worldly asceticism that appeared so fully in the sects of the Protestant ethic. ...
- The main story runs along the following lines: Weber makes at most suggestive comments to the effect that there were glimmers of inner-worldly asceticism before Protestantism, specifically in the medieval period. ... The Weber/Troeltsch account of monastic asceticism, however, ultimately stresses its otherworldly, rather than inner-worldly character. ... Neither focuses on the right carrier group, namely the lay spirituality of the later middle ages, which transformed the other-worldly asceticism of the monasteries into an inner-worldly asceticism of a sort.
