- Like many venerable jazz musicians, the drummer Art Blakey hung on long enough to see his approach to music come back into style. A leading drummer of the post-World War II bop style epitomized by Charlie Parker, Blakey was better known for his leadership of his Jazz Messengers, one of the longest-running and consistently-excellent groups in jazz. ... Eschewing the avant-garde, Blakey was ignored by jazz critics in the experimental 1960s and shunned by American audiences in the 1970s, when rock exerted its hegemonic control over the business of pop music. ... Ten years ago, Marsalis burst onto the jazz scene as a mature leader of his own tasteful group, and he credited a stint with Blakey's Messengers for his own poise and artistic direction. By the time of Blakey's death in 1990, a tour with the peripatetic Messengers was viewed as a sort of pre-requisite for up-and-coming jazz musicians. A quick way to be taken seriously by critics, record producers and audiences was to pass through Blakey's free-form university. ...

- The Life and Times of Art Blakey .
- He was born Arthur Blakey, 11 October 1919, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Blakey was a pianist first; the move to drums has been variously attributed to Erroll Garner appearing on the scene, the regular drummer being off sick and (Blakey's favourite) a gangster's unarguable directive. Whatever, Art Blakey drummed for Mary Lou Williams on her New York debut in 1942, Fletcher Henderson's mighty swing orchestra (1943-4) and the legendary Billy Eckstine band that included Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk (1944-7). ...

In England, a televised encounter in 1986 with the young turks of black British jazz—including Courtney Pine and Steve Williamson—showed how Blakey's hipness transcended generations, as he taught the IDJ Dancers (ex-break dancers who decided to Dance Jazz) the complexities of A Night In Tunisia. ...
- Until his death in 1990, Art Blakey continually found new musicians and put them through his special discipline of heat and precision. When he played, Blakey invariably had his mouth open in a grimace of pleasure and concentration: his drumming still makes the jaw drop today. For a period following his conversion to Islam, Blakey changed his name to Abdullah Ibn Buhaina, which led to his nickname Bu. His creativity, love of jazz, and philosophy still lives on in his own Art Blakey University. ...

- Comprised of four lengthy performances designed to highlight Blakey's indominatable force and indefatigable vigor, it succeeds on a plane that few studio sessions achieve. Shorter's opening title track is almost frightening for the incredible strength displayed by the soloists under the fire of Blakey's relentless battery of breathtaking rhythms. Hammerhead, another Shorter composition, is an invigorating outing, but a bit less intimidating for its more conventional melodic line and Blakey's swinging medium tempo shuffle. Hubbard's The Core has a sense of urgency that again inspires ecstatic expressions from the four soloists propelled by Workman's robust beat and Blakey's persistent polyrhythmic prodding. ...
