- The Kingdom of Dahomey.
- As you can see, it was only a small portion of the colony of Dahomey (now the Benin Republic) created by the French. With French assistance, the small kingdom of Porto Novo in the south east was able to resist conquest and incorporation into the Kingdom of Dahomey. However, as a client state of the French, Porto Novo provided the base for the French conquest of the Kingdom of Dahomey and the rest of what became the French colony of Dahomey in the 1890s.

2. Review of Warrior Women: The Amazons of Dahomey and the Nature of War. Robert B. Edgerton.
- Warrior Women: The Amazons of Dahomey and the Nature of War. ...
- His book about the warrior women of Dahomey (in Africa) and the "nature of war" is divided into five chapters. ... Chapter Two gives a short history of Dahomey society and a description of the structure of the society, particularly the traditional place of woman in that society. ... " The book is thin (155 pages of text) and the discussion of the Amazons themselves is confined to Chapters One and Four (of necessity, since good, primary evidence for the women warriors of Dahomey is scarce). ...
- Chapter Four describes the action of the women warriors in detail, in a war between Dahomey and Egba over the slave trade, an 1851 attack on the Egba capital of Abeokuta (a failure), another attack in 1864 (and another failure and a rout), and, finally, the campaign against the French in the 1890's (about which the good news is that we have more details, because the French kept records, but the bad news is that the Amazons by then had been recruited from a different social group). The French, armed with the most modern weapons -- machine guns and artillery -- met the Dahomey army at Zogbo in 1890 and for the next two years, reinforced by the French Foreign Legion, campaigned against the Dahomey king and his army. In a series of campaigns the French forced the Dahomey army back on its capital and broke it. ...
- The author speculates on possible reasons why King Gezo created the Amazon corps -- the freer role of women in Dahomey society, the prohibition on men entering the palace, the need for bodyguards, the shortage of men -- and then to these particular speculations he adds a free-ranging discussion of gender roles in different human societies, among chimpansees, male chauvinist anthropologists, new feminism, culture determinism, ferocious women geographically and historically (other women warriors in Africa, Celtic women fighting for their homes, women in the Israeli army). ...
- Insofar as this book becomes a discussion of the future role of women in combat, particularly in the United States, the example of the Dahomey women at war is not particularly apt. ...

About the year 1728 the territory now known as Dahomey was subject to three native dynasties, one of which at that date conquered the other two and set up its own despotism under the present territorial designation. ... ), of which Dahomey was said to be the last extant stronghold at the end of the nineteenth century, ended with the capture and exile of King Behanzim by a French military expedition in 1892. ...
- The Faith was first preached in Dahomey in the year 1660, when certain French residents introduced Franciscan missionaries. ... No further attempt to plant the Faith in Dahomey is recorded until 1860, when Fathers Borghero and Fernandez, of the then newly founded Lyons Society of African Missions, arrived. ...
- The first erection of a Vicariate Apostolic of Dahomey was in 1860, when its jurisdiction was defined to include all the country between the Rivers Niger and Volta. In 1870, however, the title of this vicariate was changed to "The Benin Coasts"; and in 1882 it was divided, the region west of the River Ocpara being then erected into the Prefecture Apostolic of Dahomey, from which, again, the German territory of Togo was ecclesiastically separated in 1892, and the adjacent British possessions in 1894. By decree dated 22 April, 1901, this prefecture of Dahomey was erected into the present Vicariate Apostolic of that name, which is thus seen to differ territorially from that erected in 1860. ...
- "Missiones Catholicae" (1907), the official triennial handbook of the Propaganda, gives the following statistics of Dahomey: Total Catholic population, 8900; missionary stations, 6; churches with resident pastor, 4; chapels, 11; total number of priests, 32; catechists, 15; houses of religious women (Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles), 4, with an aggregate of 20 religious; schools for boys, 13 with 1330 pupils; schools for girls, 4, with 480 pupils. ...
