- Dalhousie was named in 1826, probably by the Lieutenant-Governor of Canada, Sir Howard Douglas. The town is said to have been named after George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie (1770-1838), Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1816 to 1819 and Governor-in-Chief of British North America from 1819-1828.
