5. Dramatic Voices
- www.voiceteacher.com
- Because of the Flagstad connection to this school of vocal training, it is quite common that this voice studio becomes very inviting to larger-voiced or dramatic singers. ... Recently, it has been requested that I write about dramatic voices and the common vocal challenges that they face in preparing for a professional career. It has been my experience that singers who possess dramatic voices often feel they are 'fighting with their voice' for control. ...
- I have tried to consider the most common of problems facing the dramatic singer in this article. ...
- It is true that most dramatic-voiced singers have such strong cords that they can often sing for a long time before the damage actually occurs. ...
- By the end of a dramatic piece of music, the singer has the feeling that they are 'choking on old air in the lungs'. Many cannot make it though a dramatic piece of music because the cords become 'over-locked' to the point that the singer just has to stop singing. ...
- Solutions: There are a couple of solutions to this very major problem with dramatic voices. ...
- The question of achieving lyricism in a dramatic voice: It is obvious that the 'over-support' of the voice causes an inability to phrase musically. ...
- Solutions: I suggest that dramatic singers use several ideas in order to achieve lyricism in the voice. ...
- Common jaw/tongue problems in dramatic singers: The jaw/tongue relationship becomes 'overly connected' together when a great amount of breath pressure is present in the body. ...
- Pushing up too much of the chest register into the middle voice range: It is most common that because a singer possessing a dramatic voice is often strong in body, then he/she can push up too much chest register into the middle voice. This is a VERY common problem and I have found that few can hear it because many 'dramatic voices' can sound beautiful even while pushing the chest register too high. ... Many dramatic singers take so much chest so high that they then have to make a sudden adjustment to force the voice to go up. ...
- The Psychological Component: I have taught dramatic voiced singers for over 25 years. ...

6. Greek Dramatic Criticism
- www.theatredatabase.com
- GREEK DRAMATIC CRITICISM.
- WITH the exception of the more or less fragmentary Poetics of Aristotle there is very little in Greek literature touching upon the subject of dramatic theory. ...
- Of dramatic criticism proper there is nothing either in Plato or Aristophanes; Plato's Republic, Phdrus, Ion, Laws, and other dialogues contain a good deal on the subject of poetry, and much on dramatic poetry, but, as might be expected, the philosopher is concerned rather with the moral and philosophic than the purely literary and dramatic aspects. Aristophanes' Frogs in particular is full of dramatic criticism of an indirect kind, but it is neither so objective nor so organized as to entitle it to serious consideration as a distinct theory of the drama. ...
- It was not likely that any considerable body of dramatic theory should be formulated before the close of the great dramatic epoch ushered in by Aeschylus, so that the absence of any such work as the Poetics during that period is not surprising. ... While it has been pointed out that he was at a decided disadvantage in not knowing the literature of at least one other nation besides his own, it is doubly fortunate that so well-balanced a philosopher should have happened at the right time to sum up the dramatic theory of the age which immediately preceded him.

- When discussing the poetic form of dramatic monologue it is rare that it is not associated with and its usage attributed to the poet Robert Browning. Robert Browning has been considered the master of the dramatic monologue. Although some critics are skeptical of his invention of the form, for dramatic monologue is evidenced in poetry preceding Browning, it is believed that his extensive and varied use of the dramatic monologue has significantly contributed to the form and has had an enormous impact on modern poetry. "The dramatic monologues of Robert Browning represent the most significant use of the form in postromantic poetry" (Preminger and Brogan 799). The dramatic monologue as we understand it today "is a lyric poem in which the speaker addresses a silent listener, revealing himself in the context of a dramatic situation" (Murfin 97). "The character is speaking to an identifiable but silent listener at a dramatic moment in the speaker's life. The circumstances surrounding the conversation, one side which we "hear" as the dramatic monologue, are made by clear implication, and an insight into the character of the speaker may result" (Holman and Harmon 152). ...
- Although Browning wrote numerous dramatic monologues his contemporaries often criticized his works as being too emotional. The dramatic monologues of Browning are characterized by certain identifiable traits. The three requirements of a Browning dramatic monologue are "The reader takes the part of the silent listener; The speaker uses a case-making argumentative tone; We complete the dramatic scene from within, by means of inference and imagination" (Landow). ... On the other hand the typical Browning speaker is an "eloquent rhetorician" whose "dramatic situation itself is obviously only created by the presence of the other"(Wagner-Lawlor 288), the other is identified as the silent listener. The speaker characteristically uses "strongly rhetorical language which distinguishes the dramatic monologue from the soliloquy" (Everett). The elements of the dramatic monologue are each a topic for further analysis. Both "Caliban Upon Setebos" and A Grammarian's Funeral are dramatic monologues. ... Applying the three principles that characterize a Browning dramatic monologue can help the modern reader understand the unique intent of each poem more fully. ...
