- Possible Sighting of Asian Dust in Eastern Utah.
- These stations are intended to monitor weather, surface parameters, and sand and dust transport by wind at locations that have different land-use histories. We did not hear anything about the Gobi dust storm reaching North America until May 5th. ...
- On May 3rd, with no apparent change in the weather, we all remarked on the arrival of a strange haze from the west (Photo #2) and tried to think of various explanations (smog from Los Angeles, a dust storm in southwestern Utah, etc. ...
- A neighboring camper told us of the Gobi dust cloud the morning of May 5th, and a day or so later we learned of this web site. Mark Miller, a biologist working in Canyonlands, generously agreed to revisit our two stations on the weekend of May 10th and collected the dust that had accumulated on the airfoil-type samplers during the interval. We hope to compare these samples using microbeam-microprobe techniques with aerosolic dust collected by others from known clouds of dust from the Gobi source to determine what fraction (if any) of the dust that week could have come from China.
- If you know of anyone who has dust samples taken from the cloud, please give us the contact information so that we can exchange observations and samples (please click on one of the names near the top of the page to contact us). ...

- Dust in Spiral Galaxies .
- There has been considerable controversy about the dust content of spiral galaxies, with some new results casting doubt on the traditional assumption that its effects on emerging light are relatively minor. Trying to avoid some of the pitfalls of modelling and statistics on such complex systems, Ray White III and I have been exploring the use of galaxy overlaps to measure the dust extinction in an unusually direct way. ... It's important to understand dust in galaxies because it can have a profound effect on how we see them, and thus on how we interpret such diverse matters as the amount of dark matter galaxies contain, how may quasars do or don't exist in the early Universe, and how the different components of interstellar matter interact with each other and with stars at the beginning and end of their lives. More details (and lots of them) can be found in my course lecture on dust in galaxies. For a nice example of using dust to trace mass transfer between interacting galaxies, see the section on HST imaging and interpretation of NGC 1409/10. ...
- One of the most noteworthy results is that HST resolves most of the dust structure, so that we finally measure extinction curves with shapes quite close to what is typical for dust in the Milky Way (perhaps not surprising for luminous spiral galaxies, but our preconceptions always need confrontation with facts). ... Two overlapping pairs were observed in our ISO project to compare dust masses measured using the completely different emission and absorption techniques.
- An especially interesting aspect of this object is that we can now see the background nucleus and estimate the dust extinction closer to the foreground nucleus than any other direct technique allows (about a factor of 10 in the I band; it would be much larger in blue light but we have great trouble measuring its feeble contribution). ...

- Diagnosis: Dust comes from several sources and is difficult to eliminate completely. Increased dust could be a sign that it is time to change a dirty furnace or air conditioner filter or vacuum cleaner bag. Activities that produce dust (such as sanding) can also be a source an increase. Dust can also be introduced into your home through air leaks in ducts, or air infiltration through leaky doors and windows.

5. Dust - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- en.wikipedia.org
- Dust.
- Dust is a general name for minute solid particles of diameters less than 500 micrometers (otherwise see sand or granulates) and, more generally, for finely divided matter. On Earth, dust occurs in the atmosphere from various sources: soil dust lifted up by wind, volcanic eruptions, and pollution are some examples; airborne dust is considered an aerosol and can have a strong, local radiative forcing on the atmosphere and significant effects on climate. Dust is also widely present in outer space (see interstellar dust and Zodiacal light), where gas and dust clouds are primary precursors for planetary systems.
- The physical behavior of dust follows laws that are not always comparable with that of solid or fluid matter. For example, the pressure on a box full of dust need not be uniform (See physics of granulate matter for explanation).

- House dust mites feed on the organic components of house dust. Their feces, in turn, become part of house dust and can provoke allergic reactions in humans.

- In 1932 there were 14 dust storms of regional extent; in 1933, thirty-eight; in 1934, twenty-two; in 1935, forty; in 1936, sixty-eight; in 1937, seventy-two; in 1938, sixty-one; in 1939, thirty; in 1940, seventeen; in 1941, seventeen. ...
- As the agricultural base of the region was buried under dust, extreme hardship loomed over the southern plains. In May 1934 dust fell from a massive storm on the Mall and the White House in Washington, D. ... There Finnell supervised the conservation work for the entire Dust Bowl. ... Also in 1935 the Texas legislature established conservation districts for wind-erosion control in nine Panhandle counties, where local authorities were given power to force farmers to institute measures to halt blowing dust. ...
- The Dust Bowl was not only the result of bad weather but also of human actions that exacerbated the drought. ...
- When the black blizzards began to roll, one-third of the Dust Bowl region-thirty-three million acres-lay ungrassed and open to the winds. ...
- The origin of the Dust Bowl was therefore related to the near-simultaneous collapse of the American economy. ... Some argue that plains agriculture was chastened by the Dust Bowl years and has, with government help, reformed itself adequately so that the thirties nightmare will not recur. Others, less sanguine, point to the dust storms of the mid-1950s and 1970s as evidence that the old Dust Bowl can be reborn, if and when weather and market forces collide again. ...

- NASA and NOAA satellites have recorded Saharan dust crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
- Is it circumstance that coral reef declines occurred during the same period as desertification? Various peaks in the dust record, at Barbados and elsewhere in the western Atlantic (Prospero and Nees, 1986), coincide with benchmark events on reefs throughout the Caribbean (courtesy of Prospero, 1997) with known coral reef perturbations.
- The hypothesis proposed here is that many coral reef events, algal infestation, white band and black band disease, sea fan disease, sea urchin die-off and possibly mass coral bleaching are somehow related to dust from north Africa.
- That Saharan dust is deposited in the western Atlantic is demonstrated by the following:.
- Red iron-and clay-rich soils on carbonate islands throughout the Caribbean that are known to be of Saharan dust origin (Muhs et al. ...
- The Amazon rain forest in South America derives essential nutrients (mainly phosphate) from Saharan dust (Swap et al. ...
- The mechanisms by which dust may affect reefs include direct fertilization of benthic algae by iron or other nutrients interacting with NH4 and NO2 + NO3-rich submarine ground water, and by broadcasting of bacterial, viral and fungal spores. ...
