- The New World-Wide Earthquake Locator.
- The World-Wide Earthquake Locator aims to provide up-to-date information and detailed dynamic maps of earthquakes across the world within a maximum of 24 hours of their occurence. This web site also includes a database of past earthquakes, together with statistical earthquake prediction. The World-Wide Earthquake Locator was originally developed by Bruce Gittings of the School of GeoScience at the University of Edinburgh in 1995 and it became an early illustration of a real-time Geographical Information System, which makes use the internet World-Wide Web and the internet to map dynamic phenomena. The Locator takes data from the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), part of the US Geological Survey, based in Golden, Colorado (USA). ... The data is then processed into an appropriate format here in Edinburgh and finally displayed using a mapping service also provided in Edinburgh (although in the original version of the earthquake locator, this was provided externally, elsewhere on the Web). ... A tool like the "World-Wide Earthquake Locator" could help Emergency Services and Aid Agencies identify disasters and quickly organise their response. It is also possible for Earthquake Scientists (called Seismologists) to use information gathered about recent earthquakes to try to predict the occurrence of larger and more destructive events. Use the World-Wide Earthquake Locator, and related sites, by accessing the link below: .

- However, some experts say there is a strong possibility of an earthquake happening again in our area. ... Did you know that back in 1811 there was a pretty devastating earthquake near Memphis that rang church bells in South Carolina? It caused the Mississippi River to actually flow backwards and brought Reelfoot Lake into existence? Let's take a trip back in time to hear what those living at the time had to say about this devastating earthquake and then let's visit the future to see what the possibility of another earthquake of that size hitting our area might be. - The California earthquake of April 18, 1906, ranks as one of the most significant earthquakes of all time. ... Rupturing the northernmost 430 km of the San Andreas fault from northwest San Juan Bautista to the triple junction of Cape Mendocino, the earthquake confounded contemporary geologists with its large, horizontal displacements and great rupture length. ... Analysis of the 1906 displacements and strain in the surrounding crust led Reid (1910) to formulate his elastic-rebound theory of the earthquake source, which remains today the principal model of the earthquake cycle. ...
- As a basic reference about the earthquake and the damage it caused, geologic observations of the fault rupture and shaking effects, and other consequences of the earthquake, Lawson's (1908) report remains the authoritative work, as well as arguably the most important study of a single earthquake. In the public's mind, this earthquake is perhaps remembered most for the fire it spawned in San Francisco, giving it the somewhat misleading appellation of the "San Francisco earthquake. ...
