4. FANTASTIC BAGGYS

- FANTASTIC BAGGYS .
- Sloan and Steve Barri cut only one album as the Fantastic Baggys, but what a pop-surf gem of a 30-footer it turned out to be! Hot on the heels of writing Summer Means Fun for Bruce & Terry in the summer of 64 and recently hired as background vocalists for Jan & Dean the Baggys cranked out beach-bound classics like Tell Em Im Surfin, Surfin Craze, and Lets Make The Most Of Summer. Sloan & Barri would go on to pen worldwide chart smashes for the Turtles, Johnny Rivers, Hermans Hermits, the Grass Roots and Barry McGuire, but nothing would ever sound so ocean-drenched and innocent as the Fantastic Baggys.
5. Fantastic Baggys Story
- www.surfinagain.com
- THE FANTASTIC BAGGYS STORY .
- The Fantastic Baggys' story begins with two underpaid Los Angeles songwriters and ends with some of the most vibrant surf recordings ever.
- Upon hearing them, Oldham asked Jagger, "What do you think of the Baggys?" Jagger responded with facetious wit: "Fantastic. ...
- In the spring of 1964, the Fantastic Baggys began recording their album, "Tell ‘em I’m surfin’". ...
- Since the Fantastic Baggys were an untested quantity, Sloan and Barri did not always reserve their best songs for themselves. ... Phil Sloan usually handled the Fantastic Baggys' falsetto, alto, and bass parts, while Steve Barri sang tenor harmony. ...
- How, then, did they learn the terminology enabling them to write songs like "Big Gun Board" and "This Little Woody"? Sloan credits one of his former classmates, a wave-hungry drummer, with providing spiritual and lyrical inspiration: "Bob Myman was one of the founding fathers of the Fantastic Baggys. ...
- As Sloan explains it, the Fantastic Baggys were an attitude more than they were a group. ...
- Shortly after the Fantastic Baggys' version of "Surfin' Craze” appeared, a soundalike group called Willie And The Wheels appeared on Lou Adler's Dunhill label with virtually the same song, only rewritten as "Skateboard Craze". As followers of the Fantastic Baggys can guess, Willie And The Wheels were really the Baggys in disguise. ...
- Two additional "Fantastic Baggys" albums came out in South Africa, consisting mostly of songs by a like-named South African group, with a few leftover cuts by the real Baggys.
- The single "Anywhere The Girls Are" b/w "Debbie Be True” came out in the autumn of 1964, when the Fantastic Baggys were beginning to venture away from surf. ...
- “Move Out Little Mustang" was originally issued on Imperial as a single by the Rally-Packs, who were actually the Fantastic Baggys in disguise again. ...
- "Hot Rod USA" (written by Bobby Darin, along with Terry Melcher of Bruce & Terry) and "(Goes To Show) Just How Wrong You Can Be" both appeared on the second South African "Fantastic Baggys" album, "Ride The Wild Surf".
- Although the Fantastic Baggys never added their vocals to "Horace The Swingin' School-Bus Driver", Jan & Dean sang it on "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" LP.
- The Fantastic Baggys' last A-side was “It was I”, a cover of the Skip and Flip hit, written by Gary "Flip" Paxton. ...

7. Fantastic... About the Site
- fantastic.library.cornell.edu
- Sponsored by Cornell University's Institute for Digital Collections (CIDC) this image-bank provides a visual resource for the study of the Fantastic or of the supernatural in fiction and in art. While the site emerges from a comparative literature course on the topic at Skidmore College, it is also intended to open the door to consideration of some of the constant structures and patterns of fantastic literature, and the problems they raise. ...
- In order to take maximum advantage of the materials in the Cornell collections, it seemed best not to adhere to a strict definition of either the Fantastic or its predecessor, the Marvelous, as these have emerged in literary criticism and theory. ... In the context of western literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, The Fantastic involves dread, fear and anxiety in the face of phenomena that escape rational explanation, or that reveal the notion of reality to be no more than a construct. A fantastic experience can therefore be likened to the breaking or shattering of a frame. While the literary fantastic is limited to the last 200 years, the Fantastic in art can be construed more broadly. ...
- Because of its rich and varied modes of representation the Fantastic also lends itself quite easily to interdisciplinary approaches. Psychology and sociology, art and literary history, anthropology and folklore among other disciplines, can provide avenues of investigation useful in the study of such basic critical or analytical concepts for the Fantastic as repression, the uncanny, indeterminacy, or the postmodern. The image bank may thus also be useful for broadening discussions in areas of study quite removed from the Fantastic per se, and it is indeed our hope that it will do so.
