- Short-term Care of White-tailed Deer Fawns (Odocoileus virginianus) in a Conventional Laboratory Animal Facility.
- Although protocols exist for management of captive white-tailed deer in an outdoor facility, it was necessary to modify those procedures to house fawns in an indoor facility. Four abandoned fawns were acquired through a cooperative effort with the Department of Conservation. Physical examinations were performed and fecal samples were collected when the 2 to 3dayold fawns arrived at the facility. All fawns were infested with ticks, which were removed manually. After quarantine of 24 to 48 h, the fawns were moved to large chain-link pens and housed in pairs. ... All fawns gained weight at a steady rate during the 4-month study, with a mean weight gain of 150 g/d. Blood collection was performed at the conclusion of the study to establish reference values for 3- to 4-month-old white-tailed deer fawns. Manual restraint for clinical procedures was sufficient initially, but when the fawns grew too large to handle easily, a combination of ketamine hydrochloride- xylazine hydrochloride was used for sedation. The methods employed were successful for short-term maintenance of the fawns in an indoor facility.

- on Rescued Deer Fawns and Elk Calves.
- It has been learned that Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) affiliated researchers are acquiring rescued deer fawns and elk calves from licensed Colorado wildlife rehabilitators for use in Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) experiments. Based upon information received through Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) requests, during the last several years, certain wildlife rehabilitators have turned over deer fawns and elk calves either to be used as test subjects in fatal CWD research projects or as food for mountain lions undergoing CWD research. ...
- However, with no evidence suggesting that deer fawns and elk calves are infected with CWD, much less are responsible for its spread, the regulation makes little sense and it should be changed. ...
- Demand that the practice of rescued deer fawns and elk calves for research be terminated and that regulations be revised to allow rehabilitators outside source GMUs to care for injured deer and elk. ...

- Hurt, orphaned fawns won't get rehab help.
- Wildlife rehabilitators throughout southern Wisconsin are forbidden from caring for injured or orphaned white-tailed fawns under new state orders that the animals must be killed to fight chronic wasting disease.
- Wildlife rehabilitators and DNR officials say people who come across fawns should not touch them, anyway. ...
- "People need to know that most fawns they find aren't really orphaned," said Scott Diehl, manager of the wildlife rehabilitation center at the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee.
- To avoid drawing the attention of predators to their fawns, does leave them alone for much of the day, returning once or twice a day to feed them. The fawns' lack of scent and their color help camouflage them.
- Early May marks the start of the time of year when white-tailed does give birth and when people start to find the newborn fawns in their yards, in wooded areas or alongside roads where does have been killed by cars.
- Fawns taken from the wild most often die without the care of a professional rehabilitator, Blane said.
- The new DNR policy, issued to licensed wildlife rehabilitators in 25 counties in southern Wisconsin, forbids rehabilitators from taking in and caring for fawns and adult deer.
- It orders that "both injured and sick adults and fawns from any county where deer rehabilitation is prohibited shall be humanely euthanized. ...
- She said the department does not expect local law enforcement authorities to shoulder the responsibility for euthanizing fawns. ...
- Judy Budnick, executive director of the Wildlife in Need Center in Waukesha County, said her center may be willing to take on the unpleasant task of euthanizing healthy fawns that have been taken from the wild by people.
- "Our job is to get fawns rehabilitated and back into the wild. ...
