15. SOME FUME HOOD SELECTION AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA* Joao, R.V.1,
- siri.org
- SOME FUME HOOD SELECTION AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA* Joao, R. ... , Oak Ridge, NJ 07438 Abstract Fume hoods are important pieces of laboratory equipment and essential to any ventilation system of which they are a part. Although at best 50% of the fume hoods monitored for this study performed adequately at any one time, those with bypasses performed better than those without. ... Invariably, these differences occurred when the fume hood was affected by cross currents. The anemometer was particularly useful for detecting cross currents, variations across the face of the sash opening, and slot obstructions, whereas the flow meter was better adapted for the calibration of VAV fume hood controls. Evaluating fume hood performance is an elaborate process, but one which would benefit from more discussion and consensus among those who manufacture, locate, install, use, and certify them. Introduction Fume hoods may owe their origins to the furnaces associated with the questionable practices of medieval science(1), but, as recommended under the new Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Laboratory Standard(2), the improved understanding of toxicology and the requirements of modern laboratory endeavors dictate that fume hoods be used more frequently and their design and performance be more closely controlled. In many cases scientists have come to rely upon fume hoods as their primary, if not sole, protective device. In addition, in laboratories of older construction the fume hood is often the only means of exhausting laboratory air. ... (ASHRAE)(8), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)(9), and the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA)(10) have established baselines for fume hood design, evaluation, and operation, and associated room ventilation. None-the-less, refinements in standards and agreement on methods would optimize and facilitate current laboratory fume hood operations.

- STANDARD FUME HOODS The face velocity of a standard fume hood is inversely related to the open face area, allowing a constant volume of air to be exhausted. ...
- BYPASS FUME HOODS Bypass fume hoods are also called "balanced air" or "constant volume" fume hoods. As the sash is lowered, bypass fume hoods allow constant exhaust volumes that help keep the room ventilation system balanced. ... AUXILIARY AIR FUME HOODS Auxiliary air fume hoods are also known as "supplied air" hoods. ... The face velocity of an auxiliary air fume hood may vary. ...

- Fume Hood Cuts Electricity Use .
- Fume hoods, devices that are widely used by high-tech industries, hospitals and universities, help keep workers safe but can use a lot of energy - a single fume hood running 24 hours a day uses as much energy as an entire house. New fume hood technology developed by researchers at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory claims to reduce energy use by 50% or more.
- Fume hoods are ubiquitous in industrial, medical and university research facilities. ... Fume hoods capture, contain and exhaust hazardous fumes created during industrial processes or laboratory experiments.
- "Fume hoods typically require large exhaust flows and are usually never turned off, so they use a tremendous amount of energy both in fan power and in heated and cooled room air," said co-developer Geoffrey Bell. ...
- A typical fume hood, with a sash opening six feet wide and two to three feet high, circulates air through this sash at 100 feet per minute. ...
- There are an estimated 85,000 fume hoods in California, and more than 500,000 in the United States. ...
- "This invention improves user safety while reducing both energy use and the size of mechanical systems required to provide adequate heating, ventilation and cooling," said Berkeley Laboratory's Dale Sartor, one of the fume hood's developers and Head of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Applications Team.
