- 31 MERCHANT GALLEYS - iconography.
- The Greeks and the Romans clearly distinguished between galleys and sailing ships, using the former for war and the latter for cargo. The Egyptians had not made any such distinction until the very end of their maritime hegemony but the Phoenicians, for whom trade was the primary imperative, did distinguish between oared war galleys with rams and oared trading galleys, with or without rams. ... There is therefore a continuous class of oared sailing galleys right through the period. ... Here the bowl shaped double ended merchant ships are totally unlike the asymmetrical war galleys. By the C6th BC merchant galleys were almost identical with sailing ships except that provision was made for some oars to assist the ship in light airs. ...
- Generally speaking the smaller galleys relied on oars as the primary means of propulsion, whilst the larger merchant galleys were really sailing vessels with oars to assist in entering or leaving harbour, or making way in light airs. The standard rig used was a mainmast with a single square sail, but the larger galleys usually had an artemon sail (130) and, sometimes, a stern ending in an aphlaston like a war galley. More commonly the stern of merchant ships terminated in a Gooseneck (131) The hull shaped was generally rounder than a war galley but could retain the characteristic concave stem with a sharp cutwater or ram, (130) thus raising the possibility that the galleys wrecked at Isola Lunga are merchant galleys rather than warships. ...
- Merchant galleys appear more frequently in documentary sources because they were also used for war as troop transports or horse carriers, and therefore figure in lists and descriptions of ships. ...

- THE LAST GALLEYS .
- We all know that galleys were widely used in the ancient Mediterranean world. But when do you suppose navies quit using galleys and galley slaves? Well, they didn't die out until late in the reign of Louis XIV, in the early 1700s. ...
- Seven years after the ten-year minimum sentence was imposed, the last great battle among galleys was fought -- the Battle of Lepanto. ... Spain and the Papal states gathered over 200 light galleys and six Venetian galleasses. ...
- Galleys spent another 150 years dying out, while the technology of sailing ships raced on ahead. ...
- But the long survival of anything as terrible as slave-powered galleys tells us we aren't always as quick to accept that gift as we ought to be. ...

- Galleys to Junks .
- By Cindy Vallar Mediterranean pirates used galleys from early times through the 1700s. ... The more warlike galleys of the Ancient Greeks and Romans--triremes--had a long battering ram attached to her bow and up to 170 slaves occupied benches on three tiers to row the galleys. ...
- Later galleys, especially those favored by the Barbary Corsairs and Knights of Malta, possessed a single tier for slaves who sat and slept on benches that measured about ten feet by four feet. Up to six men per oar rowed the corsairs’ galleys while the knights used seven. Although similar in design, the Christian galleys had raised forecastles to permit the knights to jump down onto their enemy’s lower deck. ...
- Grace O’Malley, an Irish pirate, and James IV of Scotland still used galleys in the sixteenth century. ...
