- Gibraltar, jener mächtige Kalksteinfelsen, der ganz im Süden der Iberischen Halbinsel in die Meerenge zwischen Europa und Afrika hineinragt, hat eine lange und abwechslungsreiche Geschichte, welche wohl bis in die Frühzeit der Menschheit zurückreicht. Der 1848 im Geröll unterhalb des Maurischen Kastells gefundene Schädel einer Frau, der sich bei genauerer Untersuchung als Neandertaler-Schädel erwies und heute im Museum von Gibraltar ausgestellt ist, deutet jedenfalls darauf hin, dass schon vor mindestens 40 000 Jahren Menschen in den vielen natürlichen Höhlen des Felsens Zuflucht vor Wind und Wetter suchten, an den Steilhängen auf Jagd gingen und in der Bucht Fische fingen.
