- Madeline Gins has mostly been known for her collaborative works with the architect/philosopher Arakawa, releasing Mechanism of Meaning, an illustrated series of playful epistemological vignettes, in 1979, and devoting most of the last two decades exploring Reversible Destiny, a radical philosophy of architecture in which one "refuses to die. " What the President is Gins in a more light-hearted, accessible vein, her creative assaults on mundane thinking arousing both laughter and caustic impatience with the status quo. ...

- COTTON GINS .
- All early gins in Tennessee were of the saw gin type. ... Seven years later both Jackson and Brownsville had operating gins.
- Throughout the nineteenth century most planters operated their own gins, which were usually housed in a two-story building that included a storage bin, saw gin, and lint room. ... Independent gin operators, who usually managed a general store and feed and seed business in addition to the gin, slowly put the plantation gins out of business, however. By 1902 Tennessee had 833 cotton gins; in 1938 only one plantation gin remained. But that same pattern of consolidation eventually closed most independent gin operators as well; by 1958, for example, only 297 gins were operating in Tennessee. ...
- The type of cotton processed by gins also has changed the modern ginning industry. ... Contemporary gins, typically found adjacent to county seats along major highways in West and southern Middle Tennessee, are complicated industrial complexes rather than the simple machines of the past. According to the National Cotton Council of America based in Memphis, 45 gins were operating in Tennessee in 1997, employing some 1,470 workers and earning $24 million a year. ...

7. GINS, a novel multiprotein complex required for chromosomal DNA replication in budding yeast

- GINS, a novel multiprotein complex required for chromosomal DNA replication in budding yeastYuko Takayama,1,2,4,5 Yoichiro Kamimura,1,2,4 Mariko Okawa,3 Sachiko Muramatsu,1 Akio Sugino,3 and Hiroyuki Araki1,2,6.
- Here we describe a novel replication complex, GINS (Go, Ichi, Nii, and San; five, one, two, and three in Japanese), in budding yeast, consisting of Sld5, Psf1 (partner of Sld five 1), Psf2, and Psf3 proteins, all of which are highly conserved in eukaryotic cells. Since the conditional mutations of Sld5 and Psf1 confer defect of DNA replication under nonpermissive conditions, GINS is suggested to function for chromosomal DNA replication. Consistently, in S phase, GINS associates first with replication origins and then with neighboring sequences. Without GINS, neither Dpb11 nor Cdc45 associates properly with chromatin DNA. Conversely, without Dpb11 or Sld3, GINS does not associate with origins. Moreover, genetic and two-hybrid interactions suggest that GINS interacts with Sld3 and Dpb11. Therefore, Dpb11, Sld3, Cdc45, and GINS assemble in a mutually dependent manner on replication origins to initiate DNA synthesis.
