- When Volume I of Nicholas Boyle's biography of Goethe appeared, it received an avalanche of praise on both sides of the Atlantic. George Steiner, in The New Yorker, called it "the best biography of Goethe in English. ... " Now comes the second volume of this definitive portrait, published on the 250th anniversary of Goethe's birth. Here Nicholas Boyle chronicles the most eventful and crowded years of Goethe's life: the period of the French Revolution--which turned Goethe's life upside down--and of the philosophical revolution in Germany which ushered in the periods of Idealism and Romanticism. ... Boyle paints vivid portraits of Goethe's harrowing experiences of the Revolutionary wars, of the explosion of new ideas in philosophy and literature which for ten years made Jena the intellectual capital of Europe, and of the upheavals sparked by Napoleon which destroyed the Holy Roman Empire. ... And he offers brilliant new analyses of Goethe's works of the period, most notably Wilhelm Meister, The Natural Daughter, and Faust. ...

- Goethe (1749-1832) was a man of prodigious and diverse gifts. The greatest lyric poet in the German language, the author of several novels, of innumerable essays, translations and critical works, of an extended dramatic poem of 57 years' writing, and of many plays that are still performed, Goethe also found time to make major advances in botany, geology, anatomy, optics and colour theory. Goethe originally studied for law, but was invited to Weimar, where he became the duke's chief adviser. ...
- Goethe's gifts.
- Whence came Goethe's astonishing productivity? He was educated privately by his father, learning several languages and mixing with the varied personalities of Frankfurt's fairs, French occupation and the crowning of the Holy Roman Emperor. Goethe's duties at Weimar were onerous causing him to eventually flee to Italy but he was sustained by an unfailing confidence in his gifts and opinions. ... All intellectual matters fascinated Goethe, and he saw no dichotomy between artistic and scientific interests. Though increasingly divorced from court life, Goethe's was always an independent spirit that recognised kindred aspirations in those around him, making Weimar an influence on artists and thinkers in Germany and beyond.
- Goethe's importance.
- Goethe's work pushed European literature in new directions. ... The importance of Elective Affinities, which dealt with adultery, divorce and suicide, was recognised long after Goethe's death. Faust can hardly be performed, but that is not true of the many plays written throughout Goethe's life, or of those written by Schiller under Goethe's influence. Goethe was a dominating presence in European thought, and one that has continued in the abundant music, operas and films inspired by his creations.

- (Redirected from Goethe) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (pronounced 'gø tə ) (August 28, 1749 – March 22, 1832) was a German writer, politician, humanist, scientist, and philosopher. As a writer, Goethe was one of the paramount figures of German literature and European Romanticism during and around the 18th and 19th century. Goethe was the author of Faust and Theory of Colours and inspired Darwin with his independent discovery of the human premaxilla jaw bones.
- Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. ... The young Goethe studied at the universities of Leipzig and Strasbourg, and in 1772 entered upon the practice of law at Wetzlar. ...
- The most important of Goethe's works produced before he went to Weimar were his tragedy Götz von Berlichingen (1773), which was the first work to bring him fame, and The Sorrows of Young Werther, a novel which gained enormous popularity during the so-called Sturm und Drang period. ...

- Goethe admitted that he "shot his hero to save himself". ...
- The next work, his epic closet drama Faust, was to be completed in stages, and only published in its entirety after Goethe's death. ...
- Goethe's poetic work served as a model for an entire movement in German poetry termed Innerlichkeit (introversion) and represented by, for example, Heine. Goethe's words inspired a number of compositions by, among others, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Berlioz and Wolf. ...
- Although a doubtful success of Goethe in this field, the famous line from the drama "Götz von Berlichingen" ("Er kann mich im Arsche lecken" — "He can lick my arse") has become a vulgar idiom in many languages and shows Goethe's deep cultural impact extending across social, national and linguistic borders. It may be taken as another measure of his fame that other well-known quotations, like Hippocrates' "Art is long, life is short", are often erroneously attributed to Goethe.

- Finally, in 1770 Goethe went to Strassburg, this time really intent on passing his preliminary examinations in law, and with the somewhat more frivolous ambition of learning to dance. ... A strong friendship with the writer, Herder, was likewise no part of Goethe's experience at this time, a contact which was of considerable importance in these formative years.
- In 1771 Goethe returned to Frankfurt, nominally to practice law, but he was soon deep in work on what was to be his first dramatic success, Götz von Berlichingen. While this was actually the story of a robber baron of the 16th century it really represented Goethe's youthful protest against the established order and his demand for intellectual freedom. ...

- There could be at least two reasons for considering Goethe's science of nature important today (1). In the first place, present-day scientists might make explicit reference to Goethe's own science. Secondly, they could themselves apply the methods on which Goethe's science was based. The work of the Swiss biologist and anthropologist Adolf Portmann (1897-1982) both directly refers to Goethe's research and uses the same methods. Thus Portmann brings Goethe's science of nature into a modern context. ...
- Goethe's science is essentially qualitative and teleological in the Aristotelian sense in which processes are understood as a manifestation of "form," which is not to be explained only in causal terms. By emphasizing organic qualities as irreducible to mechanistic and molecular ("reductive") explanation, and by using a teleology of the type employed in explaining the ontogenesis of the human being, Portmann's biology and anthropology are based on the very principles and methods of Goethe's science. ...
- From the viewpoint of the philosophy of science, attention should be drawn to two fundamental aspects of the approaches of Portmann and Goethe as compared with the predominant neo-Darwinian view of the organic sciences. ...
- Along the way, however, certain parallels to Goethe's science will be drawn, and explicit remarks by Goethe concerning scientific principles and methods will be included to show the kinship between these two natural scientists. In this connection Portmann's explicit statements about Goethe's science will also be emphasized. ...
- With this as background, it is finally pointed out that the methodological views of Portmann and Goethe involve a fundamental shift in perspective with regard to the phylogenesis of human beings and animals (the theory of evolution), one that radically transcends Darwinism. ...
