• Francis Ford Coppola's first two "Godfather" movies are so iconic, so packed with epiphanic visual moments, so deeply embedded in our collective imagination that it's hard to remember that Mario Puzo's 1969 novel - which spawned them - was really a trashy potboiler: fast, punchy, sometimes lurid reading, quite devoid of the gravitas and emotional undertow that Coppola, his cinematographer Gordon Willis and a dazzling ensemble of actors imparted to those classic films. ... "The Godfather Returns" by Mark Winegardner - a novelist who was selected by Random House to write a sequel to the late Puzo's novel - lacks those movies' amazing resonance and the original book's pulpy energy, but as these sorts of follow-ups go, it's a solid enough performance: dutiful, suspenseful and only occasionally annoying. ...
