- In order to solve this problem, many communities have established guardianship and money management programs to provide either paid staff or volunteers to be appointed as guardians or to provide money management services. The Guardianship Alliance of Texas is the name selected by the Guardianship Advisory Board to coordinate and assist these programs. Information concerning existing guardianship and money management programs is listed below. The Guardianship Alliance of Texas awards grants to newly established and expanding local guardianship programs.
- In 1997, the Texas legislature passed Senate Bill 586 which directed that a Guardianship Advisory Board be established. The Guardianship Advisory Board originally consisted of eleven members who were appointed on December 1, 1997 by Statutory Probate Court Judges across the state. ... The Guardianship Advisory Board now consists of 15 members as the 76th Legislature, effective September 1, 1999, expanded the membership of the Board to include three public representatives appointed by the Commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and a representative of the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services (TDPRS) appointed by the Board of Protective and Regulatory Services. The expanded Guardianship Advisory Board met for the first time on October 23, 1999. The Guardianship Advisory Board was established for the purpose of advising the Texas Health & Human Services Commission on the development of a guardianship plan for the State of Texas. - The Guardianship Advisory Board is committed to developing and implementing a statewide plan to ensure that each incapacitated individual in the state who needs a guardianship or another less restrictive type of assistance to make decisions concerning the incapacitated individual's own welfare and financial affairs receives that assistance. In developing this plan, the Advisory Board will emphasize fostering the establishment and growth of local guardianship programs; and adopting minimum standards for the provision of guardianship services by guardianship programs, guardians, and private professional guardians. The Guardianship Advisory Board has conducted public hearings in Lubbock, Austin, Corpus Christi, El Paso and Houston in order to receive comments on these issues.
