- Getting Into Gear: Orthodontic Headgear.
- Headgear is a general name for a type of appliance that creates special forces for guiding the growth of your face and jaws. We also use headgear to move your teeth into better position or to prevent them from moving when they're not supposed to. Because each case is different, we will determine the amount of time you'll need to wear your headgear.
- Here are two common types of headgear:.
- The type of headgear used in your treatment is what your orthodontist believes is best to guide your teeth and jaws into their new positions.
- At first, your headgear may look a little strange to you, and it will seem a little awkward. ...
- To get the best results from your headgear, follow these simple guidelines:.
- Make sure to wear your headgear as directed. ...
- Always closely follow our instructions for wearing your headgear. ...
- Always be careful and remove your headgear as you were taught. If you remove the headgear carelessly, the part that fits in your mouth and attaches to your teeth could injure your cheeks, lips, face or even your eyes. ...
- Be sure to remove your headgear before you begin running or playing sports, including rough-and-tumble games. ...
- Be careful to prevent anyone from grabbing or pulling on your headgear. Brothers, sisters or friends who don't wear headgear may not understand the dangers involved, even in play. ...

- STUDY FINDS HEADGEAR OFFERS PLAYERS LITTLE PROTECTION.
- Dr Andrew McIntosh, from the School of Safety Sciences at UNSW, after completing a two-year study of head injuries in football and headgear performance, has called for an international performance standard for soft headgear. ... The study incorporated a number of components, including: video analysis of head injury events from football, headgear testing, evaluation of the effectiveness of headgear in football games, and surveying players' attitudes regarding headgear. A laboratory study of headgear found that the eight commercially available soft head protectors from six manufacturers did little to reduce the risk of concussion. ... For example, he said, a combination of headgear and upper-body and arm padding worn by all players might help reduce the risk of both concussion and upper limb injuries. ... "In addition, this approach might help protective headgear from becoming too bulky, by carrying some of the protective material on the striking body," he said. ... " Commenting on the outcome of his study, Dr McIntosh said: "The results are disappointing for those hoping that current protective headgear provides a measure of protection against concussion. " Dr McIntosh said the combination of headgear and upper body and arm padding worn by all players might help reduce the risk of concussion and upper limb injuries as well. ...
- -2- Commenting on the outcome of his study, Dr McIntosh said: "The results are disappointing for those hoping that current protective headgear provides a measure of protection from concussion". However, he said, headgear might be effective for younger children because of their lower body masses, the lower speeds and lower impact severities. ... About 75 per cent of the players wore headgear. Seven out of nine players who suffered concussion during their matches wore headgear. ... Dr McIntosh said a survey of attitudes indicated that players wore headgear because they felt safer and to avoid injury, so providing protective headgear was a desirable goal. He plans this year to continue the study of headgear wearing and injury rates in Rugby and Australian Rules football, and to work on the development of more effective headgear. ...

- PRESENTATION OF THE CSS SYSTEM (COMPLIANCE SCIENCE SYSTEM) AS A WAY TO EVALUATE THE USE OF HEADGEAR ANCHORAGE APPLIANCES.
- SUMMARY The aim of this paper is to present an evaluation system for the use of headgear appliances. This system is called the Compliance Science System (CSS) and it consists of a headgear neckstrap with an electronic module timer, a reader of this module that is connected to the computer and software that reads the information gathered by the module. The purpose of the CS system is to quantify the timing of headgear use and for determining patient cooperation during daily use. Two (2) clinical cases with a skeletal Class II malocclusion and severe overjet, treated with the use of a cervical-pull Kloehn headgear, were presented to illustrate the use of the CS system. ...
- The headgear appliance has been used in Orthodontics since the last century. From the first headgear appliances a number of modifications were done, but the patient cooperation factor remained unchanged. ...
- The efficacy of headgear anchorage appliances has been scientifically proven. One of the principal uses of the headgear appliance is for growth modification. Patient compliance is the most common problem encountered when utilizing headgear appliance therapy. ... The most frequently used subjective methods of evaluating the degree of headgear compliance are: dental mobility, cleanliness of buccal tubes, cleanliness of the neckstrap, space created between posterior teeth, position of the molars compared to their pre-treatment position in the casts, evaluation of the maintenance or loss of anchorage and patient answers to questions about the hours of use. ...
- Today, in addition to the subjective methods, we can use objective methods to measure the level of patient cooperation with the use of headgear appliances. ...
- Northcut5 tried a headgear timer that was made of a miniature electronic watch with a memory circuit. ...
- 1 concluded that orthodontists that monitored their patients, without informing them, had a way to evaluate their motivational techniques in relation to the use of headgear appliances. ... 2 comparing the subjective evaluation performed by experienced orthodontists, assistants and graduate students with the objective evaluation performed by a headgear timer. ...
- 3 used headgear timers to monitor 28 patients: 14 patients used a headgear calendar to evaluate the number of hours of daily use and 14 patients were not monitored daily. The final result showed that the ones that were monitored every day through the use of a headgear calendar were more inclined to wearing their headgears. ...

- Scott Delaney, head physician for McGill University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams and who led a 1999 study that looked at concussion among Canadian university football and soccer players, believes that headgear could help prevent concussions. ...
- In addition, headgear could protect players designated as headers, particularly those at the elite level where they are heading the ball up to 10 times per game, explains Delaney, who is helping to draft a position paper on preventing head injuries in soccer for the Ottawa-based Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine.
- Meanwhile, Delaney is a member of a committee looking at establishing a soccer headgear standard for Pennsylvania-based ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) International.
- He also worries that headgear worn by players like Hooper will create a “false sense of security” in protecting them from head injuries.
- It also complies with FIFA’s Law 4 handed down prior to last year’s Women’s World Cup, which allows players to wear such non-compulsory equipment as “headgear, facemasks, and knee and arm protectors made of soft, lightweight, padded material. ...
