1. The History of Rock Music. John Hiatt: biography, discography, reviews, links
- www.scaruffi.com
- John Hiatt .
- John Hiatt was born and raised in Indiana. ... After another, inferior, album of traditional sounds, Overcoats (Epic, 1975), Hiatt moved to Los Angeles. ...
- Adding reggae and rhythm'n'blues to the stew, Hiatt delivered the rawer and meaner Slug Line (MCA, 1979), that established him as an original and creative singer-songwriter. Confidently flirting with reggae (Madonna Road), pop (Radio Girl), rockabilly (You Used To Kiss The Girls) and rhythm'n'blues (Washable Ink), Hiatt had become a master who could paint just about any landscape. ...
- Hiatt's sell-out continued with the heavily arranged All Of A Sudden (Geffen, 1982), on which Hiatt's poetry gets lost in the bombast (I Look For Love, Something Happened), despite the heartbreaking gospel My Edge Of The Razor. ...
- Warming Up To The Ice Age (Geffen, 1985) even drowned Hiatt's thoughtful lyrics into the loud power-pop of The Usual, Zero House and I Got A Gun. Hiatt's emotions managed to escape the trap only in the bleak When We Ran and the roaring rhythm'n'blues of The Crush. ...
- The line-up was a de-facto supergroup, with Hiatt on acoustic guitar and piano, Nick Lowe on bass, Ry Cooder on electric guitar and sitar, Jim Keltner on drums. Hiatt was finally recovering from alcoholism (and the devastating loss of his wife, who committed suicide). ...
- From the melodic rockabilly of Real Fine Love and Child Of The Wild Blue Yonder to the folkish intensity of Thirty Years of Tears and Through Your Hands, Hiatt pours his heart on the notes and carries the listener into his intimate world. ...
- Falling prey to Neil Young's neurotic guitar style, Hiatt reinvented himself on Perfectly Good Guitar (A&M, 1993), a collection of raucous rave-ups (Something Wild, Buffalo River Home, and best of all Blue Telescope). ...
- Hiatt's third masterpiece. ...
- Hiatt returned to arranged music with Little Head (Capitol, 1997), which contains weak power-pop tracks such as Pirate Radio and Sure Pinocchio (reminiscent of Warren Zevon's Werewolves Of London). ...
- Beneath This Gruff Exterior (2004) hardly sounds like a Hiatt album: the dominant sound is Sonny Landreth's guitar, Hiatt's voice is feeble, and the material is worthy of a bar-band. ...

- John Hiatt.
- John Hiatt has come full circle, and not a moment too soon. By the time the veteran singer/songwriter's scattershot Nineties albums sank to the locker room humor of his abysmal 1997 LP Little Head, Hiatt sounded like a shell of the man who had penned such heartfelt gems as "Have a Little Faith in Me" and "Feels Like Rain. " After rebounding with last year's warm, acoustic outing Crossing Muddy Waters, Hiatt's reconvened his acclaimed late-Eighties backing band the Goners, the outfit that grabbed the baton from former Hiatt bandmates Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner, and helped craft Hiatt's 1988 masterpiece Slow Turning. Hiatt's new collaboration with the Goners marks a return to the duality that informs his best songwriting, in chronicles of family trust and trials, love and loneliness, addiction and recovery. ... Musically, the earthy sound of the Band echoes through the stutter-step drums and breezy harmonica of "Hangin' Round Here," and Rick Danko's spirit feels close on Hiatt's trembling vocal through "Something Broken. ... " The family reunion vibe peaks with the touching "My Old Friend," helping make the rejuvenated Hiatt's Tiki Bar worthy of repeat visits. (John Hiatt plays the B. ...

- John Hiatt.
- John Hiatt was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1952. ...
- Hiatt recorded the Southern-fried Hanging Around the Observatory (1974) and Overcoats (1975) for Epic Records before moving to MCA for his next two albums, Slug Line (1979) and Two-Bit Monsters (1980).
- During this period, Hiatt's music began showing the influences of the new "punk rock" movement with more "angry young man - type" lyrics. All of a Sudden, (Geffen, 1982), Riding With the King, (Geffen, 1983), and Warming up to the Ice Age (Geffen, 1985) all failed to provide Hiatt with the hit he needed despite critical acclaim and Geffen dropped him from the label.
- It was during this time that Hiatt had been introduced to guitarist, Ry Cooder and a long-standing musical partnership was forged when Hiatt appeared on Cooder's Borderline (1980) and on several subsequent albums and tours. Cooder went on to join Hiatt on John's 1987 A&M watershed release, Bring The Family.
- Hiatt, Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner formed a groovy little unit that propelled Hiatt's compositions into a higher orbit. This provided the momentum that Hiatt carried over to his next two releases, 1988's Slow Turning and 1990's Stolen Moments.
- Bring The Family also provided the song, "Thing Called Love" which Bonnie Raitt turned into a huge hit, thereby widening Hiatt's popularity.
- The Hiatt-Cooder-Keltner-Lowe groove is still a fun listen.
- Hiatt tapped into his own "grunge" roots again during the height of the "Alternative Rock" scene with his rocking 1994 release, Perfectly Good Guitar. Mandolins, acoustic guitars and a return to the country-rock sound earned Hiatt his first Grammy nomination for Walk On (1995). Hiatt's sharp wit and bluesy side show on Little Head (1997).
- John Hiatt's huge body of work have been condensed into two compilations, 1989's Y'all Caught (The Ones That Got Away) and 1998's Best Of John Hiatt. A live album called John Hiatt Comes Alive At Budokan was released in 1994 though Hiatt has never played the Budokan.

- John Hiatt "Little Head" (Capitol CDP 7243 8 54672 2 6) 1997 .
- One of rock's best-kept secrets, John Hiatt is one of the most criminally underrated artists in recent decades. ... Hiatt is highly revered by his fellow musicians; his music crosses several genres (rock, country, blues, and others) and numerous artists from all of those genres have covered his songs. As of this writing, nearly all of Hiatt's pre-1987 albums have been discontinued by their labels.
- Hiatt made his first recording as a member of White Duck, a likable if unspectacular country rock band. Hiatt was on board for the band's second and final album In Season in 1972. The four band members (Hiatt, Don Kloetzke, Mario Friedel, and Paul Tabet) each contribute songs as singers and songwriters. Hiatt's two songs are the record's high points. "You Caught Me Laughin' " sounds like the type of song that would turn up on one of Hiatt's first two solo albums; the other one, "Sail Away", sounds almost like vintage Hiatt. If a John Hiatt box set ever comes to exist, "Sail Away" would be deserving of inclusion.
