- A massive iceberg, perhaps the largest on record, has broken free from the Antarctic's Ross Ice Shelf. This image, taken from 700 kilometers in space by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations NOAA-12 polar-orbiting satellite, shows the icebergs margins as it breaks free from the Ross marine ice shelf. The iceberg, measuring 295 kilometers long and 37 kilometers wide, encompasses an area of about 11,000 square kilometers, roughly twice the size of Delaware.

- MASSIVE ICEBERG PEELS OFF FROM ANTARCTIC ICE SHELF.
- A large iceberg was "born" early this week from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica near Roosevelt Island. Scientists say the massive iceberg could drift to sea within the next few days. ...
- The iceberg has begun peeling away from the main ice sheet only 200 miles east of the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s McMurdo Station as measured from the berg's western edge. Among the largest ever observed, the iceberg is approximately 170 miles long x 25 miles wide. ...
- The iceberg was formed from glacial ice moving off the Antarctic continent and calved along pre-existing cracks in the Ross Ice Shelf near Roosevelt Island. The calving of the iceberg essentially moves the northern boundary of the ice shelf about 25 miles to the south, a loss that would normally take the ice shelf as long as 50-100 years to replace. ...
- The breakoff of this iceberg is believed to be part of a normal process in which the ice sheet maintains a balance between constant growth and periodic losses. ...

- National Ice Center have discovered a new, large, tabular iceberg. Originating from the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, the massive iceberg measured approximately 150km x 50km and was dubbed A-38. ...
- RADARSAT imagery acquired prior to the break-off of the iceberg was also processed from the CCRS archive.
- The motion and the break-up of the iceberg can be clearly seen in this sequence of images. The northern section of the iceberg was measured to drift 50km over the 10-day period of observation.
- Break-off and motion of iceberg A-38,.
- This animation of RADARSAT ScanSAR images shows the break-off of a large tabular iceberg from the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The iceberg measures approximately 150km x 50km in size and is seen to break-up into smaller pieces as it drifts northwards. The northern section of the iceberg is seen to drift 50km over the 10-day period shown in this animation. Note the top left section of ice shelf that breaks off after being struck by the main iceberg. The image showing the ice shelf prior to the iceberg breaking off was acquired approximately one year ago.
