1. The Straight Dope: If Teflon is nonsticky, how do they get it to stick to the pan?
- If Teflon is nonsticky, how do they get it to stick to the pan?.
- Everyone is familiar with Teflon, that nonstick surface no self-respecting housewife can do without. ...
- Obviously they don't remember the first Teflon pans in the 1960s, which required special non-scratchy cooking utensils, lest you scrape the Teflon off. Fact is, the reaction when Teflon was invented pretty much consisted of, "Whoa, Teflon, the nonstick miracle! So tell us, genius, how do we make it stick to the pan?".
- Teflon, known to science as polytetrafluoroethylene, is a pain to work with because it's nonsticky in all directions, the pan side (the bottom) as well as the food side (the top). Teflon is a fluorinated polymer, a polymer being a passel of identical building-block molecules linked together to make a long chain--the stuff of most plastics. Fluorine, due to certain electrochemical properties you'll thank me for not explaining now, bonds so tightly with the carbon in Teflon that it's virtually impossible for other substances, e. ... , scrambled egg crud, to get a chemical-type grip or, for that matter, for Teflon to get a grip on anything else. In addition, the finished Teflon surface is extremely smooth, giving said egg crud little chance to get a mechanical-type grip.
- So how do they get Teflon to stick to the pan? First they sandblast the pan to create a lot of microscratches on its surface. Then they spray on a coat of Teflon primer. ... The primed surface is then baked at high heat, causing the Teflon to solidify and get a reasonably secure mechanical grip. ... (The Teflon finish coat will stick to the Teflon primer coat just fine. ) Works a lot better than the early Teflon pans, but you can still ruin Teflon cookware by subjecting it to extremely high heat. This causes the bonds between some of the carbon atoms to break, giving other undesirable stuff a chance to bond thereto and making the Teflon look like Jeff Goldblum in the last reel of The Fly.
2. SEASTAR's BASELINE High Purity Teflon Bottles
- www.seastarchemicals.com
- SEASTAR's BASELINEâ High Purity Teflonâ Bottles.
- Teflonâ has gained widespread acceptance for use in trace analysis because of the combination of chemical resistance and perceived purity. However, Teflonâ bottles and labware can contain significant amounts of metallic impurities from both the resins and manufacturing process. In general, virgin Teflonâ PFA and FEP resins are better than PTFE in terms of metal impurities, but even bottles and labware manufactured from the best virgin resins and exhaustively pre-cleaned prior to use can contain impurities which will compromise acid solutions at the sub-ppb level.
- This effort has resulted in a significantly cleaner line of Teflonâ PFA and FEP bottles. ...
- SEASTAR BASELINEâ Teflonâ Bottles are available in the following sizes in both PFA (perfluoroalkoxy resin) and FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene resin): 30 ml, 125 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml and 1000 ml. ...

9. How does Teflon stick to the pan?
- If nothing sticks to Teflon - how does Teflon stick to the pan? .
- Teflon, the non-stick coating used on pots and pans, holds the title in the Guiness Book of World Records as being the slipperiest substance on earth.
- Scientifically speaking, Teflon will not chemically bond to anything, but can be forced mechanically into small nooks and crannies. This slippery substance adheres to their surfaces once manufacturers sandblast them to roughen them, apply a primer, and embed the Teflon into the primer. ...
- Roy Plunkett, accidentally created the recipe for Teflon in 1938, while attempting to produce a better coolant gas than the one currently on the market. ...
- For pronunciation's sake, the doctor shortened the name for the substance to Teflon, but even the abbreviated name failed to nudge DuPont into production of the product.
- In fact, DuPont waited until 1948, ten years after Teflon's discovery, before beginning its production for commercial applications.
- As DuPont dragged its heels in launching Teflon, a Parisian named Marc Gregoire learned of it, and successfully applied it to his fishing tackle to prevent the line from tangling. At his wife's urging, he managed to apply Teflon to her pots and pans, and within several years, this entrepreneur sold in excess of one million Tefal (his name for Teflon) coated pots and pans.
- The concept of Teflon coated pots and pans did not stick in America. ...
- Today, the use of Teflon coating is firmly embedded in America, and extends beyond pots and pans to include bakeware and other kitchen utensils. ...
