- jan.ucc.nau.edu
- Georg Philipp Telemann 1681-1767.
- Telemann held appointments in Sorau (1704), Eisenach (1709), and Frankfurt (1712) before he took the position at Hamburg (1721) which he held until his death. In 1722 Telemann was offered the cantorship of the St. ... Godfather to Bach's second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, and possibly the most prolific of all composers, Telemann wrote 12 cycles of cantatas for the Church year, each cycle having one cantata per Sunday! By comparison, Bach wrote five such cycles. Telemann also wrote 46 passions (Bach 4), 40 operas (Bach 0), Masses, motets, sonatas, chamber music, keyboard works, concertos, overtures, suites, and other orchestral works. Telemann is mentioned in a letter (1775) from C. ...

3. Zohn Abstract
- ebbs.english.vt.edu
- "Watermarks at Dresden and Their Implications for Telemann Chronology".
- One of the most pressing desiderata in Telemann studies has long been the establishment of a reliable chronology for the instrumental works preserved in manuscript. In the near complete absence of autograph manuscripts for the sonatas, suites, and concertos, such a chronology must be based in part on a study of the numerous manuscript copies preserved at the Saechsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, one of the two main repositories of Telemann's instrumental music. ...
- Building upon earlier studies of Dresden watermarks by Karl Heller, Manfred Fechner, and Wisso Weiss, this paper proposes a chronology of the Dresden manuscript sources for Telemann's sonatas, with references to manuscripts of the orchestral suites and concertos. Watermark evidence, supporting study of copyists' hands and stylistic analysis of the music itself, allows for the dating and redating of numerous individual works and collections, including the Six sonates dans le gout italien (shown here to have been composed at least a decade before its Parisian publication in an unauthorized edition) and the well known Essercizii musici (published by Telemann in 1739, but now shown to have been written during the 1720s). The study of Dresden watermarks also contributes greatly to our knowledge of the copying activities of several important scribes, including Johann Georg Pisendel, the Dresden Konzertmeister and a friend of both Telemann and J. ...

7. Classical Net Review - Telemann - String Concertos II
- www.classical.net
- Georg Philipp Telemann.
- The title is a misnomer, but never mind: this is a wonderfully enjoyable collection of music by Georg Philipp Telemann. Until relatively recent times, Telemann, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, seldom received the respect due to him. ...
- Goebel, as he did on an earlier CD of "string concertos" (DG Archiv 463074-2) reveals Telemann to be an apparently bottomless well of invention and delight, someone who might even have smiled more than Bach. In his booklet note, Goebel reminds us that Telemann and Bach were both "children of German Protestantism, which looked for the innermost meaning of things," and yet Telemann, unlike the mostly stay-at-home Bach, traveled everywhere he could to learn about new music. ...
- Probably under the guise of providing drills for court-employed violinists, Telemann wrote three concertos so bustlingly infectious that it seems unlikely that anyone could have been unwilling to practice it, let alone to hear it. ... And, while I am it, let me mention the "Sinfonia spirituosa" in D for which this CD is named – Vivaldi might be brilliant and Bach profound, but Telemann's fecund imagination makes him absolutely unique among Baroque composers.

- Georg Philipp TELEMANN .
- TELEMANN was a contemporary of Bach and a good friend of Handel and the Bach family - he was godfather to CPE. During his life, he was considered the preeminent German composer and his fame far overshadowed Bach's (Bach was actually the third choice for the post of Kantor at Leipzig, Telemann being the first). ...
- It may be true that Telemann could compose faster than most of us can write ABC. ...
- Telemann's Nouveaux quators en six Suites have interesting gossip behind them that the liner notes here neglect to mention. In 1736, when Telemann married Maria Katerina Textor from Frankfurt, he was already fifty-five years of age, the lady considerably younger, and Viagra about 250 years in the future. Not long after the marriage the lady ran away with a young adventurer, leaving Telemann to pay for the mink coats and diamond rings. The bills came up to 3000 thalers (a lot of money!), and though comfortably off, Telemann felt the pinch. ...
- French style was not new to Telemann who was a fan of Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) and whose "French overture" so impressed him that he composed about a thousand of them (sheesh!). ...
- These are quartets in the true sense of the word, unlike trio sonatas that Telemann scored for the same instruments. ...
- This is a second disc of Telemann's chamber music from this source (the first was CCS 5093), and if it is anything to go by, the quartet has matured considerably. ...
- One regrets the loss of Telemann's 12 fantasies for viola da gamba, which would have allowed Yeadon a chance for a solo recital. ...
- For those who would investigate more about Telemann, the man and his music, try this site and the Telemann reference at Baroque Composers and Musicians Page - both are good introductory sites (I referred extensively to the first, for which thanks are due to the unknown webmaster). Naxos is also producing some of Telemann's music, well-played and well-recorded at budget-price. ...
